This guest session from Luke Hussey looks at 'Midfield Rotation'.  Luke has vast experience working in football and currently coaches youth at grassroots, adults in non-league and U13's at a Category 2 Professional Football Club.

Having worked with Luke I have seen first hand how passionate he is about developing footballers; his approach and delivery is engaging and thought provoking for all players.  As you will see from the session below he is a big believer in coaching through games or game related practices.

Luke is a UEFA 'B' qualified coach and is currently working towards a Master Degree in coaching.  You can follow him on twitter here or visit his blog.

THE SET UP

Pitch split initially in to thirds, with the midfield third quartered.

Teams set up in GK - 2 - 3 - 1 formation

Goalkeeper, 2 Defenders versus an attacker in the end zone and the midfield 3 matched up.

Players locked into thirds.  Midfield three try to get into 1 of the 4 boxes, ideally not occupied by a team mate, rotation will occur naturally as players swap and search for space.

Above, RED defenders split, midfielder receives and plays into the striker

Coaching Factors & Outcomes

Try and recognise when, where and why to rotate

Can you create space to receive the ball?

Can you create space for your team mate to receive?

Can you create space for the attacking unit to receive the ball? By passing the midfield completely as above.

Progressions

Allow midfielder to join the attacker if they receive in a box with no defender or allow midfielder to join attack if they pass in.

Allow defender to travel in to a box if its clear.
