When to PASS and when to DRIBBLE

Players set up as above, 2x teams of 6 split into 3's in to channels. I ran this session with U8 and used a 30x40m area, this can be adapted depending on age/stage.

The concept is to try and build a session to explain the differences and benefits of passing and dribbling.  The session progresses slowly and has built in safe zones, so players can choose when to take risks!

Introducing... WHEN to PASS

Initially players are "Locked in" their zones, this will change as the session progresses.  I used 2 balls in this practice, you may want to start with 1 depending on the ability of the players.

Challenge is for the players is to "Pass the ball from box to box, so YELLOW's working with YELLOW's and STRIPES working with STRIPES"

Key Questions/Coaching Points

When is it a good time to pass the ball from box to box?
When is it safe to transfer?
What do we need to be aware of?

Players must pass when the moment is right; team mate is ready, no opposition in the way...perhaps when there is 2 balls in one area?

Introducing WHEN to DRIBBLE...

Now players can choose to dribble the ball from area to area, through the other team. Here player 1, moves the ball from one area to the other.  Player 2 has recognised this and has restored the balance so that there are 3 in each section.  This encourages players to recognise when to move and scan for the open space...highlight this and explain the importance!

Add competition...

Now explain to the players that they can tackle the opposition when they enter your zone, so when they choose to dribble or pass through.  Here the YELLOW player without possession tries to tackle the SKY in possession.  If the SKY gets through to his team mates he is safe, if he loses it the SKY can only win back when the YELLOW choose to risk it again!

Into a game situation...

Now with players set up as above, YELLOWS are attacking with SKY's defending.  YELLOW's scoring in the goal, SKY's score be regaining possession and returning the ball to the coach.

Defenders are locked in their zones initially, this can progress to... can only tackle in their zones, so nearest the goal and zone 3.

This game allows the attackers to discover how to attack; when to pass and when to dribble.

Add competition. Keep score. Rotate regularly

Coaching Points

The coach always starts the attack, this is great to maintain the focus and tempo of the players...ideal with younger players.

Encourage attackers to use both boxes, so do not flood either box

Encourage players to use the full width and depth of the area.

Player 1 receives possession must choose to pass into box 2 or 3. Make good decisions.  Encourage positive play, allow players to learn from mistakes and highlight good practice.

Do not isolate the player in possession, (3) offers support by staying in line or deeper than the ball.  Also the what if we lose it? scenario...remember support can mean on, ahead or behind the man in possession.

Encourage players to come and collect possession in between the lines, (2) so the players drops deep to pick the ball up.
