"Below  is session I delivered a couple of Saturday mornings ago to an under 9 squad at a Charter Standard club that has over 40 teams.  The coach often used the game as carrot or reward for the players to get them to focus on the practice.
I explained the whole-part-whole coaching method and that the Small Sided Games needs to be seen as the major part of a session and not something we give as a reward.
The boys worked very hard to understand the process I was delivering (outdoors on a muddy grassed area)  and could give the answers of when & where to support etc, so much that I progressed onto the 1 touch floating player in a central area (this was the coach due to numbers attending)
The coach now uses the W-P-W concept and has seen a marked improvement in the application and performance of his squad as a whole."

WARM UP - CIRCLE WORK

Working across the circle in 3 stages with a ball between 3:

Running with the ball
Turning - look at different turns
Dribbling

Emphasise the technical “Why?” of each of the 3 steps

WHOLE - POSSESSION 5V3

4 Goal target game for the 3 players.
10 consecutive pass target for the 6 players.
Observe the whole performance of the 6 players re support play and quality of passing and decision making.

PART - 3 v 1 PASSING AND SUPPORT IN TIGHT AREAS

3 v 1 with the 3 starting with 10 points credit, this reduces if they give possession away…..keep changing the defending player every 60 seconds to keep a high tempo.

Coaching points:

Create space
Support the player on the ball. (third man running)
Be composed on the ball
Quality of passing
Commit the defender before passing
Decision making re when to shield the ball

WHOLE  - 4 v 4 GAME WITH CONDITION

4 V 4 Attacking 2 target goals. Must be in opponents half to score.

Encourage composure and patience on the ball with good support in front and behind the ball.

Progression to the exercise:
Add a 1 touch floating support player in a central zone, the team in possession must play through the floating player in the central area before attempting to score.

Evaluate the performance and understanding of the players re support play and decision making.
